FALL IN LOVE WITH GIMMY’S ‘FALL ON ME’

Feel like a happy cry? Or a reminder of the good things in life? Well you’re in luck. Byron Bay’s GIMMY aka Gemma Owens has revealed a new music video that delivers just that. Taken from the singer-songwriter’s 2024 debut album “Things Look Different Now”, this new brightly coloured visual for track “Fall On Me” is just as much about being in love as the song is…

The song begins like a love song sung to you by a lover, its gentle acoustic guitar intro and Owen’s stunning vocals creating real raw intimacy. The video also begins with intimate moments like these: listening to the radio in the car, swimming in a river, being alone together, acted by Owens and her partner Alexandra Rees. If it feels genuine, it’s because it is. The video made in collaboration with director Sofia Grimoldi and videographer Aidan Rice, embodies the emotional and personal subject of the song and shows an authentic portrayal of life and love.

As the song’s anthemic chorus erupts and the full band joins, the video and its themes also explode into a more ‘everything, everyone’ sort of love. Lyrics like “We’re humankind we don’t like being alone” and “We’re always healing and we’re always on the mend” invite us into the song, and reminds us of our own loves, friendships and feelings. Owens notes that this was her inspiration in making this video: “I’ve had some wonderful feedback from this song and how it has moved people… (how) it made them feel strong emotions or took them back to a memory. It felt like something was missing in the record without this song having a visual element, so I suppose the feedback was my inspiration to make the video, as well as my inspiration to promote real feelings”

The song, like most of Gimmy’s debut album, weaves folk, surf and indie rock but is ultimately defined by Owen’s impressive vocals and her charming confessional lyricism. The music video is a wonderfully candid portrayal of Owens’ life and friendships that matches Gimmy’s sound perfectly. “Fall on Me” is an emotional heart-felt song leaning into the themes of belonging, humanity and, most importantly, love and this new video of nostalgia, colour and laughter compliments it perfectly. Among many things, it’s an opportunity to learn who Gimmy is on a deeper level.
